City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has said that a detailed report on the losses incurred by the people in Karachi during the riots that hit the city December 27 to 31 would be finalised within few days, as 80 per cent of the work in this connection has already been done by the city government.
He said this while talking to the head of the “commission for assessment of losses and payment of compensation to the private affecters” Captain Usman Ali G. Issani, who called on him at his office along with the commission members Syed Anwar Haider and Saud A. Mirza here on Wednesday.
Expressing concern over the huge damages caused to government and private properties in the aftermath of the December 27 tragedy, the Nazim said it was for the first time in the history of Karachi when more than 20 industrial units and thousands of shops and vehicles were set ablaze, which must be compensated.
The city government has, therefore, initiated action on a public level to find out the correct figure of losses in the city, he added.
He said that a special counter has been set up at the City Government Secretariat to collect the details of losses from the affected people while the DDOs of the Revenue Department were also receiving claims from the citizens under the supervision of EDO, Revenue.
Besides, the administrations of 18 towns and 178 union councils of Karachi were also collecting such details, he added.
He said that the claims received from affected people have been verified by the union council Nazims to ensure transparency and correctness in the process.
Mustafa observed that Karachi had suffered the most during the unfortunate incidents, adding that he himself visited industrial areas where factories and mills were torched and the owners were still disturbed. He said that the government would play its role to ensure payment of insurance money to the affectees without delay.
“We have also coordinated with the associations of the industrial zones concerned to assess the damages and it is now their responsibility to provide actual and transparent details of the losses,” he added.
The Nazim also assured full cooperation to the commission for speeding up this process.
The head of commission Captain Usman said that they would submit the report of losses to the President within a month and urged the city government to complete its work in 15 days.
